Annes Transformation In The Diary Of A.Frank - Free Essay Example
In the Diary of Anne Frank, we get to see Anne change from a child to a woman during her two years in hiding at the Secret Annex. Anne matured mentally and grew in knowledge during her time in hiding. Her difficult situation was made more complex by her puberty. She had difficult relationships with her family and The Van Daan family. She starts off her diary as a sensitive but silly thirteen-year-old that was full of life and optimism. By the end of the diary, we barely recognize the Anne we knew from the first diary entries. Her changes are complicated and cover many elements of her personality. There is a definite contrast in her levels of maturity from the beginning of the diary to the end of the diary. As Anne matures emotionally and physically, she gets her first period, she begins to recognize her shift from childhood to adolescence. Her thinking becomes more sophisticated. One of the biggest changes seen in Annes diary is her feelings for Peter van Daan, a boy that was hiding with her at the Secret Annex. When she first meets Peter, she finds him to be shy, awkward, lazy, an obnoxious dope. She was an arrogant, wild, mean-spirited child. In the beginning they have no real connection except for the dreadful situations that have brought them together. Over time she learns to endure him. Anne starts showing a more sensitive side and a willingness to be more open. They work on getting to know each other and develop a mutual attraction. His interest in her inspires her to reciprocate and their relationship changes for a short time. It is a short romance due to Annes disappointment with Peters satisfaction with mediocrity. They agree not to fight and keep the peace for everyones sanity since they must continue living together. This shows great growth on her part and a total contrast to her earlier self. Annes less sensitive side is apparent in the first part of the diary when she writes about her mother. Anne was emotionally distant, and totally unkind. She finds fault with her mother in every aspect. She has a lack of respect and displeasure for her mother. At the beginning of the diary she refers to her as mummy and later calls her mother. She feels her mom lacks sensitivity and real motherliness-a lack of sweetness and tidiness. The longer they hide in the Annex the more distant they grow. Over time she became less ignorant and started acknowledging her own mistakes and understood why her mother acted the way she did and why she was treated the way she was treated. As she matured and calmed down, she was able to see things from her moms perspective. She realized her mom loved her and actually loved her back. Anne changed immensely during her time in the Annex. Her behavior evolved in a positive way, even though the times were hard, and she grew up in a confined area without normal surroundings that most children require. She grew from a carefree, selfish, typical lack of respect thirteen-year-old into a caring young adult who sees both sides of every situation.

Media Violence And Its Effects On The Readers - 2212 Words
Violence is considered very prevalent amongst kids and young teens, due to what they see in media. Whether it is through television, radio, internet, movies, books, video games or newspapers, children get exposed to unfiltered violence beginning from a very young age. Many debate whether or not violence shown in media causes violence in kids, but there are two perceptions to this. Either, kids will reproduce the things they see in media, or it will help kids prepare for violence and actually learn how to react if ever faced in such situation. Although many people believe media inflicts violence, that is not usually the case. Violence has been around for many years before media was even invented. Before the television, internet, and radios were even developed, horrible acts of violence would still occur without medias influence. It is difficult to understand how the two comics, Buster Brown and Superman Chronicles have a negative impact on the readers. While both comics present violen ce in their own way, they portray them uncommonly. Buster brown is the epitome of violence, causing social chaos and wreaking havoc amongst neighborhoods without consent for human life. He represents the true darkness of violence. Superman on the other hand uses his means to stop people from creating social chaos and hurting others, and does this without killing a single soul despite how wretched it may be. Judith Ortiz Cofer is a Puerto Rican whose writing often examines the conflict and the beauty of cultures mixing together Essay Example For Students
Judith Ortiz Cofer is a Puerto Rican whose writing often examines the conflict and the beauty of cultures mixing together Essay Judith Ortiz Cofer is a Puerto Rican whose writing often examines the conflict and the beauty of cultures mixing together, as people immigrate to America. Though she exhibits a strong connection to her Latin heritage, she often seems to also resent that part of her life. There are many standards and expectations in the Puerto Rican society which Cofer writes to subvert, viewing them negatively. As a Puerto Rican woman, Cofer often disagrees with the limits and expectations placed on a woman in Puerto Rican society, and this attitude is the subject of much of her work. In Claims, the speaker describes Grandmother. Cofer uses this poem to illustrate a family and describe an individual, as well as telling the reader about parts of Puerto Rican culture, such as its views on womens roles and on sexuality. On the surface, Claims is a poem about a Grandmothers life. She has grown old, like a used, weathered Bedouin tent. After spending her life as a wife and mother, Grandmother finally has a chance to reclaim her own life. Grandmother seems to have been submissive, accepting her role throughout life to sacrifice herself for others, while all along wishing for her freedom. She considered each of her children a burden, but an acceptable one. She had made a pact / with man and nature to live as a wife and bear and raise children. She kept her pact, waiting for the day when her children would leave the nest and her husband would pass away. In Claims, Grandmothers time has come and her real self, the person she wants to be, is returning, like the sea rising with the tide. One can imagine the sand when the tide is out, as it is claimed by people and animals. The sea seems to be giving up part of itself, but it will return to claim the sand again. In the same way, the Grandmother has given her life, allowed other people to occupy days that were hers, but is reclaiming her sand in the poem. Examining Claims on another lever, one finds messages speaking out against the portrayal of a good woman in Puerto Rican societies. Women are expected to sacrifice every aspect of their own lives for their husbands and children. The Grandmother accepted her role in society, but always had dreams of claiming her own life. Grandmother made a promise when she was married, and she kept her promise. She raised five children and led a life committed to a husband who was expected by society to wander. But all along, Grandmother had dreamed of the day when she could secure her freedom. She dreamed of sleeping in her own bed and simply being herself. Her dream is finally realized in old age, as described in the poem. Grandmother claimed the right to be herself and live her life. Her days were constantly occupied by caring for her children and her nights were always invaded by her husbands presence. Now that her family has all moved on, Grandmother has her house and her life for herself. Each right that she has claimed has multiple meanings about her life and society, her dreams and true personality. The first right, that of sleeping alone and owning her nights, describes an internal conflict which Grandmother carried. While she truly loved her family, she yearned for space and freedom. She wanted to control at least some part of her life, but every moment was dedicated to her family. Her second right is to never bear / the weight of sex again nor the accept / its gift of comfort. For women in Puerto Rican society, there are many limitations because of their gender, but there are also many ways in which female sexuality is encouraged and praised. .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20 , .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20 .postImageUrl , .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20 , .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20:hover , .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20:visited , .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20:active { border:0!important; } .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20:active , .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20 .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u39fe649fd37042a654cdfea355ca8f20:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: On Death EssayThe role of wife and mother which Puerto Rican women are placed in is a very confining one. Their entire lives are devoted to finding a husband to love, in spite of societys expectations that he will stray, and to bearing and raising children. A good Puerto Rican woman gives her whole life to her family. Past that, she sacrifices even more to anyone else who is in need. The weight of her sex involves all the expectations and limitations placed on a woman by society because of her gender. However, there are other sides to societys views of women. One of these ideas is that a woman should appreciate her sexuality. This concept is often thought to be particularly evident in Latin societies, such as Puerto Rico. Women wear colorful, often risquÃÆ'à © clothing. Their dancing is beautiful, complicated, and often seductive. Another aspect of the comfort of a womans sex is the close bond that women often share in a community. For example, women may look forward to seeing their neighbors at the grocery store or the laundromat. This closeness provides a woman with comfort and a chance to relax and take time off from her family duties. There is also comfort in the guaranteed loving bond a woman has with her children and in knowing that her family is strong. The womans sex is a burden and a place of refuge, but Grandmothers chance to abandon her sex is part of her dream of freedom. Cofer often illustrates cultural synthesis in her works. Some evidence of this can be found in Claims. For example, the poem is written mostly in English, but there are elements which imply a Latin culture. The most obvious is the use of the word nÃÆ'à ¡ufragos, which translates to shipwreck victims, to refer to her miscarriages. Most simply, the use of a Spanish word implies that Grandmother is part of a Latin society. Also, it is a reference to the closeness of island people to the ocean. They rely on it for food, business, and contact with other countries. There is also the fact that the poem is written in English, but it is about a Puerto Rican woman. Though there is evidence of knowledge of the Puerto Rican society and definite respect for Grandmother, the speaker seems to be an American, living an American life while keeping a connection with her Puerto Rican heritage. Grandmother is a strong woman. She lived a life of sacrifice, giving of herself to every aspect of her family and community. She accepted the burdens and the gifts of her place in society. The language of the poem is not overly intellectual or complicated, showing the simplicity and honesty of Grandmothers life. It is plainly written and flows, as Grandmother flowed through life, accepting her roles and societys limitations. The speaker has completely adapted to her new life, as one can tell by the mastery of the English language which is shown in the poem. Some of the isolated lines show bitterness which is felt by Grandmother, such as when she says that Childrenà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ / steal your days. Another example is the last line of the poem, completely separated from the rest of the thoughtà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬ she is claiming back her territory. One can find several emotions in that one line, from hostility about the time she sacrificed to relief that she can finally claim her time back. In her work, Cofer presents many issues of Puerto Rican society. She challenges gender roles and takes steps to unite the two cultures she lives in without losing either one. Claims tells several storiesà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬ the story of an old womans life and of a females place in Puerto Rican society, for example. It has vivid imagery of the old woman, of the ocean, and of shipwrecks. Claims defends a womans right to be herself, rather than a slave of society and of her family. In this poem, Cofer once again challenges the expectations and limitations placed on women by society. It is a complicated work with many layers of meaning.

Lab Report Sample
Lab Report Paper To conduct a vive analysis, samples are oven dried tort at least 24 hours. The soil is placed and shaken through a stack of sieves with openings of decreasing size from top to bottom. The mass of particles retained in each sieve is determined. Results showed that the particle-?size distribution curve of coarse aggregate is characterized by a steep curve. This means the coarse aggregate is poorly or uniformly graded with small variation in size Particle-size distribution curve of fine aggregate is characterized by an S-curve. It is well graded and has a gradation of particle size that spans evenly the size from coarsest to finest. Conclusions drawn from the interpretation of the particle-size distribution curve is supported by computed coefficients Of uniformity and gradation Which is 6. 79 and 1. 03 for (well graded) fine aggregates, and 1. 57 and 1. 05 for (poorly graded) coarse aggregate. Significance of the Experiment Particle size analysis is important because it determines the soil gradation, which is an indicator of other soil properties such as compressibility, shear strength, and hydraulic conductivity. A poorly graded soil will have better drainage because of more void spaces. A well graded soil is able to be compacted more than a poorly graded soil. Standard Reference ASTM CLC 36-06 Standard Test Method for Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates. Pennsylvania, US: ASTM International, 2006. I. OBJECTIVES After performing this test, the students are expected to: 1. Determine the percentages of various size fraction on the basis of the total mass of the initial dry sample. 2. Determine effective grain size after plotting particle size distribution curve (percent finer versus particle diameter in millimeter). . Calculate coefficient of uniformity and curvature and classify aggregates into well graded or poorly graded aggregates based on given criteria or these two parameters. II. EXPERT MENTAL PROCEDURE A. Materials and Equipment Sieves No. 4, 8, 16, 30, 50, 100, and 200 for fine aggregates Sieves No. I-IM 3/4- IM, 1/2-in. , and 3/8-in, for coarse aggregates Balance accurate to C, I-g for fine and 0. 5 for coarse aggregates Oven Brush B. Preparation of Equipment. All mass of sieves including the pan are determined. Then, sieves are nested in order Of decreasing size Of opening from top to bottom. . Sieving. The sample is placed in top sieve. The sieves are agitated by hand in a vertical and lateral motion. 4. For course aggregates, the sample is split into two or more batches, sieving each batch individually. The mass of the several batches retained on a specific sieve are combined before calculating the percentage of the sample on the sieve. . Sieving is continued for a sufficient period and in such manner that not more than 1 % by mass of the material retained on any individual sieve will pass that sieve during 1 minute of continuous hand sieving. 6. The mass of each size increment is determined on balance. The total mass of the material after sieving should check closely with original mass of sample placed on the sieves. NOTE: If the amounts differ by mor e than 0. 3 based on the original dry sample mass, the results should not be used tort acceptance purposes. C. Data Analysis l. The mass of soil retained in each sieve is computed by getting the difference of mass of sieve with the retained soil, and the product of no of batches made and the mass of sieves. 2, The percent retained is computed by getting the ratio of mass of retained soil on each sieve, and the initial mass of the sample. 3. The recent finer is computed by getting the sum of mass of soil retained on smaller sieves, subtracting it from the total mass of sample, and dividing the sum by the total mass times 100. 4. Percent finer is plotted on y-axis while the particle size diameter in logarithmic scale is plotted on x-axis. A curve connecting the points is drawn. Logarithmic scale is used to represent grain size information that typically spans many orders of magnitude. 5. Important parameters in computing coefficient Of curvature and uniformity such as effective grain size (DID), DID, and 060 are determined from the particle size distribution curve for fine and coarse aggregates. Ill. RESULTS OF EXPERIMENT Particle-Size Distribution Curve and Determination of 060, 030, and DISC Figure 1. Particle-Size Distribution Curve (Fine Aggregates) Figure 2. Particle-Size Distribution Curve (Coarse Aggregates) lb. DISCUSSION Effective Grain Size (DID). It represents a grain diameter for which of the sample will be finer than it. It can be used to estimate the permeability. The effective grain sizes in fine and coarse aggregate in this test are C. 14 mm and 10. 4 mm respectively. These values are obtained from the particle size distribution curve shown in Figures I and 2. Coefficient of Gradation (C). This parameter (also called as coefficient Of curvature) can be expressed as: where; DISC, 030, and DID the particle-size diameters corresponding to 10, 30, and 60 respectively, passing on the cumulative particle-size distribution curve. Fine and coarse aggregates are thought to be well graded fiftieth coefficient of curvature (C) is between 1 and 3. The calculated coefficient of gradation is 1. 03 for fine and 1. 05 for coarse aggregates. Coefficient of gradation is only one criterion in grading aggregates. Gradation also considers uniformity coefficient which will be discussed in next section. Uniformity Coefficient (Cue). This is defined as ratio of the diameter of a particle of a size that is retained in sieve that allows 60% of the material to pass through, to the diameter of a particle of a size that is retained in a sieve that allows of the material to pass through. This can be simply expressed as: An aggregate is thought to be well graded if the coefficient of uniformity (Cue) is greater than 4 for coarse (gravel) and 6 for fine aggregate (sand). Calculated values for this parameter are 6. 59 and 1. 57 for fine and coarse aggregate. Classification. Coarse aggregate is composed mainly Of gravel and crushed stones which pass 3-inches sieve but are retained on No. 4 sieve. Fine aggregates is mostly sand Which passes NO. 4 sieve but are retained on NO. 200 sieve. The experiment showed that the samples used are poorly graded gravel and well- graded sand. Both Of the aggregate pass the criteria for coefficient Of gradation which value should lie between 1 and 3. Fine aggregate is well graded sand with uniformity coefficient greater than 6. Coarse aggregate coefficient of uniformity is very small and did not exceed 4. Coarse aggregate sample is poorly graded ravel. V. LABORATORY SUGGESTIONS Suggestions for Laboratory Improvement Here are some of my personal suggestions that I believe will help in improving the laboratory: Acquire New Lab Materials/Repair Old Materials. Some of the materials in the laboratory really need repair or replacement. Use and borrowing of some materials and equipment are sometimes on a first-come, first served basis because of limited availability. VI. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION Coarse aggregate is composed mainly Of gravel and crushed stones While fine aggregate is composed of sand. Particle-size distribution curve of coarse aggregate is characterized by a Steep curve. This means the coarse aggregate is poorly graded (uniformly graded) and has small variation in size. Particle-size distribution curve Of fine aggregate is characterized by an S-curve. Fine aggregate is well graded and has a gradation of particle size that spans evenly the size from coarsest to finest. This conclusion is supported by computed coefficients of uniformity and gradation which is 6. 79 and 1. 03 for (well graded) fine aggregates, and 1. 57 and 1. 05 for (poorly graded) coarse aggregate. Manual sieving procedures can be ineffective because the amount of energy seed to sieve the sample is varying. Lab Report Sample Lab Report Paper Osmosis happens when water diffuses across the membrane from the region of lower solute concentration (higher free water concentration) to that of higher solute concentration (lower free water concentration) until the solute concentrations on both sides of the membrane is equal. (Reese, 2011). Active Transport is the type of transport of molecules where energy is supplied to the transporter system to transport in the direction opposite to a concentration gradient. (Hickman, 2008). The objectives of our experiments are to characterize the plasma membrane and to differentiate diffusion, osmosis and active rainspout. II. Methodology A. Structure of the Plasma Membrane i. We mixed 5 ml of water and cooking oil into a test tube by shaking it. Then we observed the mixture as it settles for five minutes. We shook the test tube again and took a sample into a slide before it settled. We observed it under the LOOP of the compound microscope. Ii. We placed cooking oil into a Petri dish, and dropped an egg solution into it. We observed it for a formation of a membrane, then puncturing it. Iii. We placed the evaporated milk in a beaker until it is % full and heat it. Second is to remove the milk skin and heat again. Observe what happens. B. Selective action of the Plasma Membrane i. We prepared three test tubes, L abele accordingly, with Mil of aqueous yeast suspension and three drops of Congo red solution. We added 4 drops of 40% formalin into the first test tube, heated the second one, and let the third stand as it is. We each took a drop of each in a slide and observed it. Ii. We placed 10 ml of alkaline yeast suspension in a 100 ml beaker then added 10 ml of Neutral red Solution. After observing it, we filtered 5 ml of the mixture through a filter paper o separate the yeast from the liquid. C. Permeability i. Diffusion a. We placed a pinch of Potassium Permanganate (Km) and Methyl-blue crystals on top of an agar that was in a Petri Dish. B. We filled up a test tube with a collision solution and slowly rotate it until a thin film covers the entire inner surface of the test tube. We placed the test tube in a rack in an inverted position to let it dry. After ten minutes, we removed the collision gently and slowly with the use of water. We poured in a part of 50% glucose and 2 parts of starch solution. We tied the end of the collision and rinsed its outside. We let it soak in a ml beaker containing ml water and ml 2% iodine. After two minutes, we took samples of the solution and tested it with iodine potassium iodide, for testing the presence of starch, and Benedicts solution, for the presence of Glucose. Ii. Hemolytic and Creation of Red Blood cells. We prepared three slides with 1-3 labels. Then, we paced a drop of 0. 9% Nasal on the first, 10% Nasal to the second and a drop of distilled water on the third. Then we had a volunteer to put a drop of his blood to each of the slides. Then we covered the slides with a cover slip and viewed it under the microscope. Ill. Results and Discussion i. When we mixed the oil and water, it assumed a yellowish-whitish color which gradually separates from each other. And when we viewed the mixture under the microscope, the image that it showed was bubbles, water molecules, which are not really mixed in the oil. Ii. The egg solution Looked like a bubble in the oil. Then when we ruptured its membrane, the egg solution spreads in the oil. And it formed another membrane- like envelope. Iii. After we removed the first skin that formed, another skin formed. The skin is formed due to the chemical reaction hat affects the structure of proteins and fat molecules. When water evaporates from milk during heating, the milks protein and fat molecules become more condensed on the surface. B. Selective action of the Plasma Membrane i. The results of this experiment are in a table below. Test Tube # Content/Procedures Observations Alkaline yeast suspension, Congo Red solution and formalin. The mixture had a dark reddish-violet color. 2 Alkaline yeast suspension and Congo Red solution heated on an alcohol lamp. As we were heating it, the mixture darkened slightly, a few shades darker than the third. Alkaline yeast suspension and Congo Red solution left as it was. This was left as it is and has a bright red solution. Ii. When we mixed the alkaline yeast suspension with the red solution, the Neutral red solution assumed a dark red color. When we filtered the yeast, the cells in the filter paper have a deep red color and the residual solution has a ye llowish-orange color. The color of an acidic solution is Red, while a basic solution is yellow-orange. The cells affected the extracurricular fluid, such that the basic Ph level of the suspension was affected. Since the yeast cells are very acidic, even in basic solutions, it goes through diffusion until the whole solution is in equilibrium. When we filtered the cells, the alkaline solution went bank to its original basic nature. C. Permeability a. When we placed the Km, which originally has a blackish-brown color, it diffuses in the agar acquiring a purple color. And after some more time, it became reddish-orange color. While the Methyl blue crystals diffused at a much slower rate. It has a deep blue color. Just like in an Agar, Small molecules can pass through the cell membrane by diffusing themselves into the membrane. The rate of diffusion is faster with compounds of low molecular weight, while it is slower with compound with a high molecular weight. B. Observations: Time Test for presence of Starch Test for presence of glucose After two minutes Negative. The mixture did not have any color change. Negative. But after heating the Solution, the mixture had a bluish-brown color. After four minutes Negative. But after heating the Solution, the mixture had a brown color. After six minutes Negative. But after heating the Solution, the mixture had a reddish-brown color. Since all results are negative, there were no molecules that passed through the collision. But there was an observed change in color with the Benedicts test. Ii. Hemolytic and Creation of Red Blood cells The first slide gave an image of an equal coloration of yellow and red. Then the second one showed an image with a red cell with some yellow. While the last gave an image of red with a larger area of yellow. Blood cells have a 0. 9% Nasal in their intracellular fluids. The first slide is Isotonic because the extracurricular and intracellular fluids are in osmotic equilibrium.

Sample Essay on Analyzing the Basics of Cellular Structures and Features Understanding the basics of cell structure and how they go about ensuring cell functions as the basic unit of life is a piece of knowledge that can be applied efficiently in this field of science. This research paper focuses on analyzing these basic structures and outlining their overall importance to all life-forms. A cell is the basic unit of life and represents the smallest living organism with the ability to function as a life form. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of this very unit of life has revolutionized medicine and still can take research and development in health care to greater heights. All cells are fully equipped with the ability to eat, grow, protect itself and reproduce. These capabilities are made possible through the integration of the certain structures in the smallest of natureââ¬â¢s organisms. To fully understand how they go about these functions, it is imperative that a close look at the structure of a sail is analyzed and understood from scratch. Therefore, my research will be focused on how cell forms eat, grow and protect their internal environment. For an organism to grow, it must have a steady source of replenishments to secure the energy needed for growth. In cells, this energy source comes from two primary elements: the sun and a molecular sugar or fat. The nucleus, serving as the major operating system, contains multiple organelles to drive its functions. The organelle used for managing energy is the mitochondria. This organelle receives information from the nucleus via ribonucleic acid (RNA), which initiates its need to acquire and refine energy from the sun. After that, a process similar to photosynthesis ensures that the energy is broken down into manageable parts for cells to consume. Then it provides the entire organism with the needed energy to grow and protect itself. As a unit of life, it is important for cells to protect their internal environment from intrusive external sources and it does it using membranes. Cell membranes are initially created from a framework of fat based acids commonly known as- phospholipids. These membranes are built to do a lot of protective and even digestive work. Cell membranes protect hydrophilic substances, both residing inside the cell or from external sources, from leaving or entering the cells internal space. These hydrophilic substances naturally gravitate towards water sources, and letting that process occur without restraint harms a cellââ¬â¢s structure. The genetic structure or codes of cellular organisms also play an important part in keeping the entire structure in synch. That is because they send messages to other structures of the cell- mitochondria, chromosomes, etc.- on how to behave or function. Cells do this through the symbiotic relationship between DNA and RNA. Basically, DNA produces the information needed by each structure to work, while the RNA helps transport and transcribe the provided information for the entire organism. These basic maneuvers ensure that single cells, cells in animals and plants function in a healthy manner. Here we come to the end of his article covering topics you can exploit when writing about cell biology. Comparative Management Analysis of Two Firms. (Biogenta and Outback Assignment
Comparative Management Analysis of Two Firms. (Biogenta and Outback INC) - Assignment Example Comparative Analysis of Both Firms Organizational design and structure Organizational design and structure is main standing base of any corporation operating on a global and local level. If we look at the two scenarios both the companies are completely different in their perspective and focus of production but the nature of work demands innovation nonetheless (Mcfowler 2001). Organizational design and structure mainly consists of six major elements. These six elements consist of work specialization, departmentalization, chain of command, span of control, centralization or decentralization, formalization and traditional designs (Mcfowler 2001). Work specialization In terms of work specialization in organizations the term refers to how much pressure is put on to individuals within the organizations how through different processes each task is carried out. In both the organizations assigned to analyze each had an effective system of recruiting the most talented and skilled staff for the job but the problem for Outback lies in the external environmental forces too (Carroll 1985). The tourism industry is facing a shortfall because of which Australia requires a good number of 42,000 people by 2015. In such a scenario the staff hired should be valued and considered as an asset to the organization whereas the company is applying paternalism to the structure which is de motivating the staff to come up their ideas for revolution and change (Carroll 1985). On the other hand Biogenta is promoting its staff and making efficient use of its human capital by employing them in cross functional teams and making the best use of them (Carroll 1985). Departmental ization Both the organizations Biogenta and Outback have similar division of departments such as finance, marketing, human resource and support (Gitman and Mc Daniel 2009). Among the many types of departmentalization Biogenta chooses to go about product departmentalization and goes for cross functional teams and virtual teams from various departments to cater to different tasks. The good part about it is that it initiates a good flow of information within departments and the negative aspect is that it can only be applied to a limited category of products (Gitman and Mc Daniel 2009). As far as the case of Outback product departmentalization is applied to increase the levels of the system to satisfy family issues because of this there are limited follow up of organizational goals but yet efficient managerial distribution is carried out (Gitman and Mc Daniel 2009). Chain of command There is strict chain of command extending in Outback INC where authority is of supreme

Midterm ONE - Essay Example However, in 1609 there was some reorganization in the area and the London Company became the Virginia Company. This year also heralded the arrival of Lord De La Warr as the first governor, and the subsequent establishment of strong work ethics (Brinkley, 33). 1612 saw a man named John Rolfe begin to grow tobacco in Virginia, something which turned out to be very profitable for the area and began the expansion of the colony. Additionally, 1619 saw the area gain the first slaves from Africa, as well as the growth in population from women and children, which allowed the culture to begin to thrive. The Virginia colony was also important for providing a model for U.S. government which we still use today, with 1650 seeing the meetings of elected representatives splitting into two chambers as seen in congress today. The later part of the 17th century saw Baconââ¬â¢s Rebellion, which was essentially a revolt against the governor of Virginia by Nathanial Bacon. The main reason for the upri sing was that the people of the Virginia colony were upset that the governor was ignoring pleas for a stronger military presence in the area (Brinkley, 35). Although seeing some minor success, Bacon died before progress was made with the revolution, but this did sow some seeds for a Revolution before the Revolution. ... South Carolina had strong links with the overpopulated Barbados, which had already begun to embrace slavery. The links with the Caribbean and the interest in the economics of slavery in this region are crucial to understanding the build-up to the Revolution. However, the boat did not arrive in the Hudson River as planned but ended up in Cape Cod, where they landed outside the London Companyââ¬â¢s territory. They found some land that had been cleared due to some Native Americans dying of disease and the local residents helped them to found their own colony. William Bradford was elected governor and sought legal permission to found the colony. More people began to arrive who did not agree with the religious tenets of the area but came because of fertile land (Brinkl ey, 45). In 1664 Charles II gave his brother James territory between Connecticut and the Delaware river, some of which had already been claimed by the Dutch (Brinkley, 28). One of the major settlements in the area was New Amsterdam, but this soon surrendered and became New York. There were tensions in the area between the Dutch who were considered ââ¬Å"patronsâ⬠and the wealthy English settlers. Pennsylvania was founded because dissenting English religious group founded by George Fox wanted to find a place for religion and a distinctive social order. Quakers, back in England, had suffered persecution and looked to America to provide a tolerant new land to live in. Pennsylvania had good relations with the Native Americans and always paid

Graduation Speech: Regrets :: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address
Let me begin by saying that I am very honored to be addressing the County High School Class of 2012 as students of this institution for the last time. We've spent these last four years creating some serious memories: four years of chieftain power, leaking roofs, questionable Homecoming skits, and musical principals. Four years of good teachers, bad teachers, new teachers, old teachers. Four years of youth, music, growing up and breaking free. Four rubber chickens, four yearbooks, four ASB presidents and four chubby bunnies. But consider this question for a moment: what is your single biggest regret from the past four years? If you could go back in time and change one thing, what would it be? I asked Ms. Parks to pose this question to two classes full of Seniors and I have here some responses. For those of you who answered, thank you very much for your honest and thoughtfulness. Now some of us, in pondering our biggest regret, probably think immediately of a relationship we've had. Here are some examples: "I regret having the same boyfriend throughout high school." "I regret putting so much time and emotion into one person, when that one person should have been me." A very common subject of regret was decisions people made concerning academics: "I regret screwing around during my first years of high school because I had to make it up and almost didn't graduate." "I never studied or did all my work in classes, and slacked off when I have the potential of a 4.0 GPA." There's a note at the bottom of this one, it says, "Oh, well, I've got another chance." On a somewhat similar note, behavioral regret made a strong showing among our class: "My biggest regret is waking up and not knowing what I did the night before." "Letting Robbie Ford eat crab cakes on Prom night." "100 hours of disciplinary community service." "I made so many stupid mistakes, disrespecting my friends and family. Thinking drugs were the thing to do. I was stupid!" Occasionally, we have had to deal with watching our friends struggle. By the time we summon the courage to take action or offer help, it is often too late. "I regret standing by and doing nothing while people I cared about destroyed themselves." "My biggest regret -- not forgiving someone before they passed away." "I regret not telling my best friend how much he meant to me, and before I knew it, it was too late because he killed himself.

Environmental Scanning Essay
The environment is responsible for more company changes that the general public often realizes. The future of a company depends on the reaction that the company has to environmental changes. By not adapting to the changes, companies could ultimately end up failing. Recognizing that the environment is changing, businesses need to be able to adapt their products to keep up with new opportunities and balance a strategic fit between the environment and the company (Wheelen and Hunger, 2010). Toyota: A Responsibility to the Environment. Toyota led the revolution on economically friendly vehicles when the Toyota Prius was introduced in the United States in January 2009 (ââ¬Å"The fifth toyota,â⬠2011). The Prius is the first in a long line of cars since 2009 to be marketing towards not producing dangerous emissions harmful to the environment. Toyota recognized the need for more energy efficient cars to reduce and adapted to meet the need. This quick move resulted in Toyota standing out as a leader within the automobile industry. In 2011, Toyota introduced the Fifth Toyota Environmental Action Plan. This action plan sets the precedence for standards for 2020 through 2030. The three themes throughout the action plan is construction of a low-carbon society, construction of a recycling-based society, and the construction of a society that coexists with nature and environmental conservation (ââ¬Å"The fifth toyota,â⬠2011). Toyota is committed to developing the next generation of vehicles that rely on clean energy such as electricity rather than fuel. Toyota also will ensure market acceptance of these new vehicles by having these vehicles stand out with different characteristics that customers will want to have (ââ¬Å"The fifth toyota,â⬠2011). Toyota is seeking to stimulate the hybrid vehicle market by introducing new models and expanding the hybrid vehicle market field (ââ¬Å"The fifth toyota,â⬠2011). Toyota is also working with consumers directly by implementing initiatives by promoting eco-driving as well as providing traffic-flow improvement using current IT & ITS technologies (ââ¬Å"The fifth toyota,â⬠2011). By asserting Toyota as an industry leader in hybrid vehicle technology, Toyota has a competitive advantage. Making the action plan public information as well as focusing all future technology around this plan, Toyota is displaying dedication to the environment as well as dedication to what customers want. By making these goals public, Toyota has a responsibility to ensure the effectiveness of their plan. Toyota will measure the effectiveness of the action plan by working with the REACH Regulation to ensure the goals they set forth are being met (ââ¬Å"The fifth toyota,â⬠2011). The REACH Regulation focuses on minimizing the impact of chemical substances on the environment as well as people and provide corporations with insight on responsibly managing the use of chemical substances (ââ¬Å"The fifth toyota,â⬠2011). Toyota also plans on working with government agencies to ensure that environmental goals are being met (ââ¬Å"The fifth toyota,â⬠2011). In 2008, Toyota began the process of registering products either directly or indirectly used in the manufacturing of their vehicles (ââ¬Å"The fifth toyota,â⬠2011). In 2009, Toyota announced that only 15 supplies used in vehicle manufacturing were substances of high concern, and began to change these products for products that match REACH regulation (ââ¬Å"The fifth toyota,â⬠2011). By working closely with REACH and other government agencies, Toyota is able to keep constant measure of their success in their environmentally based action plan. Florida Power and Light: Clean Energy for a Clean Future Florida Power and Light is committed to changing based on environmental needs. No longer is it possible for electric companies to operate with fossil fuels alone. Florida Power and Light uses a mix of fuels at their power plants in order to generate clean energy (ââ¬Å"Our commitment to,â⬠2014). Due to this mix of fuels, Florida Power and Light is recognized as a clean energy company with one of the lowest emission rates (the emission rate is currently 35% better than the industry average) and obtains most energy from clean-burning natural gas (ââ¬Å"Our commitment to,â⬠2014). This year, Florida Power and Light began operation at three emissions-free solar energy facilities in Florida (INSERT). By using clean energy, Florida Power and Light is number two in the country for energy efficiency and offers one of the lowest energy charges in the state to their customers (ââ¬Å"Our commitment to,â⬠2014). Florida Power and Light is committed to being held accountable as a leader in energy efficiency. By working closely with the U. S. Department of Energy, Florida Power and Light can stay up to date on how to follow their current plan on power plant modernization process. Florida Power and Energy also updates the Florida Public Service Commission on a regular basis to ensure they are complying with the standards for clean energy (ââ¬Å"Our commitment to,â⬠2014). The parent company of Florida Power and Light, Nextera Energy, makes their governing documents, policies and procedures public knowledge and files in compliance with government agencies to ensure that they are meeting the environmental needs necessary (ââ¬Å"Our commitment to,â⬠2014). Since the U. S. Department of Energy must oversee all power plants in the United States, Florida Power and Light will have to successfully maintain effective clean energy to not only operate within standards, but to continue to be a leader in the field of power and energy. Performing an environmental scan is important to companies due to constant change. The environment is in a constant state of change. If companies do not recognize this change, they will fail to adapt to the needs of the current economic conditions. By failing to change, companies run the risk of becoming obsolete in the new environment and are no longer able to operate. By performing environmental scans, companies can gage where changes need to be made and how to be leaders in their field on how to successfully execute making the necessary changes in order to remain relevant. Politics and Poverty Essay - 1237 Words
Politics and Poverty Today there is a split in American politics on how to combat poverty. Throughout history, how America combats poverty has changed depending on what party is running the government. There has been a number of different parties however, Republican, Democrat, The Bull Moose Party, and other various ones. However, these views can be put into two main categories: The Liberal ideology and the Conservative ideology. There are three areas, which have broad and differing views on how to combat poverty. Welfare History Liberals and conservatives have always had differing views on welfare. Welfare has been a controversial issue that has gone way back in history. From Reagans administration in providing major cutbacks in welfare, to Clintons Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act signed in 1996, which mandated a work-first approach to assistance, established lifetime time limits on aid, and many other events that show us how welfare has been and still is a major issue in America today. Conservative v Liberal Perspectives Conservatives generally believe that the welfare system is broken. Generally, they do not want government intervention or regulation of the economy. They most generally believe reducing social welfare expenditures is the best way to go. Charles Murray, a conservative political analyst suggests that [t]he expansions in public welfare, [â⬠¦], led to disincentives to work, a corruption of values and thus welfare resulted in more welfare (History of Welfare). In other words, welfare has brought even more problems, one of them being, dependency. Dependency is something most conservatives fear.
